You will try to multitask a dozen times today. Answer an email mid-call. Glance at a text while writing. Cook while listening while half-watching.
And every time, you will lose a little. Because your brain cannot multitask. It never could. What it does instead is quieter, sneakier, and it is costing you more than you think.

🧠 The Core Idea: You Don't Multitask, You Switch
For anything that needs real attention, your brain has one spotlight of focus. It can only point at one place at a time.
What feels like multitasking is that spotlight switching back and forth, fast. Task, switch, task, switch. You are not running two programs in parallel. You are toggling, and it happens quickly enough to feel simultaneous.
The only true exception is when one task is automatic, like walking while talking. The moment both need your conscious attention, the illusion breaks. You are switching. And switching is not free.

⚡ The Switching Cost
Every time your brain switches tasks, it pays a cost. Cognitive scientists call it switch cost, and it is measurable to the millisecond.
When you switch, your brain has to disengage the rules of the first task and load the rules of the second. That reconfiguration takes time and energy, every single time. Do it once, the cost is tiny. Do it hundreds of times a day, and research suggests it can add up to as much as 40 percent of your productive time.
You feel busy and exhausted, with less to show for it. That gap between effort and output is the switch cost.

Here is the part almost no one knows, and it is why multitasking feels so foggy.
When you switch from task A to task B, a piece of your attention stays stuck on task A. A researcher named Sophie Leroy called this attention residue. Part of your mind is still processing the last thing even as you try to start the next.
So you are never fully present on anything. You bring only a fraction of your mind to each task, because the rest is smeared across everything you were just doing. That is why after a morning of juggling, you feel like you were busy for hours but cannot point to anything you did well.

🔬 The Stanford Finding (Held Honestly)
There is a famous Stanford study on this, and I want to give it to you with its limits attached.
Researchers compared people who chronically multitask across media with people who do not. The heavy multitaskers performed worse at filtering irrelevant information and worse on working memory, even in controlled tests.
The honest caveat: this is a correlation. The researchers themselves said they could not tell whether heavy multitasking damages attention, or whether people who already struggle to filter are simply drawn to it. And later attempts to replicate it have been mixed. So this is a real, influential signal that chronic multitaskers show weaker attention control, worth taking seriously, but not proof that multitasking rewires your brain.

🧰 Practical Reset: The Single-Task Protocol
The fix is the opposite of a productivity hack. It is a mindfulness practice applied to work.
Step 1: One thing, one window.
Choose one task. Close every other tab, app, and notification. Phone in another room, not just face down. Remove the invitations to switch before they arrive, because willpower loses to a buzzing phone every time.
Step 2: Name it and set a timer.
Say it out loud: for the next 25 minutes, I am writing this report. Naming it engages your prefrontal cortex. The timer gives your brain permission to ignore everything else, because it knows there is an end.
Step 3: When the urge to switch comes, notice it and return.
This is the mindfulness rep. The urge will rise. Do not fight it and do not obey it. Notice it the way you notice a thought in meditation, and gently return to the one task. Every time you do, you train the exact muscle multitasking erodes.
Step 4: Close the loop before you switch.
When you must move on, take ten seconds to finish the thought and note where you stopped. That small closure reduces the attention residue you carry into the next thing.

Pick one hour tomorrow and run it in a single browser tab while your phone is in another room. One task, start to finish. Notice two things: how strong the urge to switch is, and how much you get done when you do not obey it. One hour is enough to feel the difference in your body.

If multitasking is a lie, why does it feel so real, even efficient?
Because the switching happens faster than your awareness can track. You do not feel the gaps where your brain reloads. You only feel the motion, the sense of doing a lot at once. And motion feels like progress, even when it is not.
There is also a small dopamine hit in each switch, a tiny novelty reward for jumping to the new thing. So multitasking literally feels good in the moment, which is exactly what makes it so hard to give up. Single-tasking feels slower at first because you removed the hits. Then the real work starts getting done, and you feel the difference.
